While up at the mountain bike venue earlier in the afternoon to do a photo shoot with Christophe Sauser we were startled by the sudden appearance of at least six large fire trucks. The area is bone dry, and a tinderbox with pine needles all over the ground. An enormous cloud of smoke appeared over the venue, and security was evacuating all staff. There have been forest fires in the region. No word yet on how much damage was done to the venue. It has been extremely quiet here about this incident; absolutely nothing in the news. When I was taking photos, the police ran over to me yelling "No photos, no photos!" 2ª noticia We have confirmed that a major fire occured at the mountain bike venue this afternoon. At approximately 3:35 pm a fire started which quickly spread through a forested section of the venue. The cause of the fire is under police investigation, but it is believed to have been deliberately set. Thirty fire crews responded, with the first ones on the scene within minutes. Water bombers were also brought in. Luckily, wind pushed the fire away from the athlete village and administrative centre, but approximately 10% (600 metres) of the course was lost, including the primary feedzone and the first climb. Television was also affected, since cables were destroyed. Course designer Martin Whiteley was on hand, and a new section has been laid out, with a replacement climb and feedzone, which will be cut tomorrow. However, the course will be shorter than as originally designed, and an extra lap may have to be added. The big push now is to get the replacement trail cut in time for the final UCI site inspection on Sunday, and for riders training to start Monday.
