Reynolds 953 Technical Details I'm a metallurgist at Carpenter Specialty Alloys who is working with Reynolds on the 953 project... ...The 953 is under development and we are still working out all the details (tube walls, welding, brazing, cutting, etc). The frames at Interbike had 953 on the main triangle, but had normal 316 stainless on all the other components (this is why the frame was heavy). Our target is to have butted frame product that will compete with plain gauge Ti 3/2.5 on both weight and price (with the ride of steel). The material is STAINLESS, it is WELDABLE, and it is BRAZABLE. It will not have to be painted if you don't want to. Just check out the finishes on the non-plated stainless steel golfclubs and you will get an idea what kind of finishes will be possible. The material is a Mar-Aging Stainless Steel borrowed from the aerospace industry and modified specifically for bikes. The material is at least twice as strong as Titanium (both 3/2.5 and Ti 6/4). It does require an age to get to full strength, but it will most likely be possible to build a bike with the tubeset already aged. More details on this material will be available around January, so keep checking Reynolds website. _________________________________________________________________ What do you mean by "Aged"? I'm just curious what that term means for steel (aging). Is this stainless the same type that is used in the making of aircraft hydraulic lines? Also, do you know anything about 300M steel? I read it is a variant of 4130. _________________________________________________________________ Age Hardenable Alloys Good question. Precipitation hardenable alloys are alloys that start at one strength level and then after a low temperature "aging" process, they go up dramatically in strength. Examples of age hardenable alloys are the heat treatable aluminums, Ti 6/4, and the Reynolds 953. At the aging temperature, the atoms in the material start to move around and precipitates forms (on the microscopic level). These precipitates work like glass does in fiberglass. They take a material that is relatively soft and kick the hardness and strength way up. What is neat about these alloys is they can be formed when they are soft (butting, swaging, etc) and then they can be aged to the high strength. Many other steels are hardened using carbon which make them hard to impossible to weld or they require an after weld heat treatment to soften the welds 300M is an age hardenable alloy steel (not stainless). It is similar to our AerMet 100 but has poorer resistance to fracture and worse fatigue (it actually rusts worse, too). I would expect it can't be butted and would then be heavier than the 953 alloy, unless you wanted to weld extremely thin material (AerMet's problem). _________________________________________________________________ A little extra details on Reynolds 953 The material has enough Chromium to be stainless. That's all I can say for now. It is miter-able. In terms of difficulty, we are still evaluating. It will be much easier than the AerMet 100 was for many reasons. Although this material is really strong, this material does not have a lot of carbides in it so the blades shouldn't wear at a high rate. It is also butted, so the ends will be thicker helping to prevent the tubes from collapsing in the tooling. The tube material is based on our "Custom" family, but has been optimized specifically for bike tubes. It has higher strength than our aged Custom 465. I'm not going to be able to put out too much more info on this until it is more publicly released through Reynolds, but I do have to say that we are extremely excited about this material compared to other bike materials (in weight, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, formability, manufacturability, material stiffness, and cost).
Hace IF cuadros de street?
